20 ?’s and Geek Girls
Yesterday hubby and I took our daughter and two of her friends to the Matsuri Festival up in Phoenix. This is a Japanese spring festival with lots of cosplay and anime. The girls were super excited and spent most of the time stalking um finding people dressed in their favorite costumes and taking their pictures. Hubby and I also had fun looking at the booths, and I ate the yummiest thing! Fried mochi! As someone who can't eat gluten one of the things I miss are crunchy, greasy, fried foods....
Dr. Who Steampunk Bling
Gifts for Geeks is a new blog series I am starting. There are so many talented artists in the world trying to sell their unique creations, and while I can’t buy from everyone I can certainly entice and tease my readers into checking them out. So I shall make it my sworn duty to hunt down those people making jewelry, clothes, art, shoes, bags, etc. that speak to my Geeky little heart. Shannon Dickey artist of The Broken Sprocket on etsy.com is making the cutest Dr. Who and Steampunk jewelry. I...
The Day My Son Swooned
I forgot to post yesterday so today you get a dramatic but true tale of my 18 year-olds swoon. My editor Kilian is in the hospital right now, so while I will give this a once over please overlook mistakes due to no Kilian, and the emotional content I am typing. All names except for Logan’s shall be made up to protect people or because I can’t remember them. Thanks, The Mng. It was a normal Tuesday Morning. Logan was in Stage Craft Class at his high school. His teacher Miss. Bell was working...
Juggling Explosives
Last night I had a minor melt down. I managed to hold off until the kids were in bed then the ugly thoughts and tears began. Now my overly emotional state might have been caused by the email saying I hadn’t placed in a writing competition I’d entered, the fact that I had gone almost a week without thyroid medication, or that I worked straight through the weekend and got the see my husband for only a few minutes each day (I’m rather high maintenance). No matter the reason, I was in a bad place....
Three fingers of Doom or Cartoon
I am sure you have noticed that in cartoons the characters frequently have only three fingers, which is odd. I’m guessing it’s easier on the artist and makes their hands look more normal from further away. Maybe the newer ones have more fingers, but the old ones—three fingers. Now I could go and research the reason for this, but I’m lazy so if anyone knows please leave it in the comments 🙂 Now here is the interesting part—or at least I hope to make it sound interesting. I notice while...
Jury Duty: A Goldmine of Awesome!
Most people groan when they get a summons to jury duty. I will no longer be one of those people. The last time I went to jury duty it was a fount of inspiration and study. While in the room waiting to be called (which I never was, and I am taking that part personally) I people watched. I learned that some people are a lot more attractive when they keep their mouth shut. I sat across from a tall handsome man, broad shoulders, nice suit, thick brown hair. I remember thinking how he would make a...
Taking the Day Off
Yesterday I went out on a date with my hubby. Both the kids were in school, he didn’t have work, and I took the afternoon off. And it was amazing. We just walked around downtown. Nothing spectacular and yet it was perfect, because I needed a break from everything. I take time off to attend school things for my kids, to go to writers groups and workshops, and to get work done at home. But I almost never take a whole day off. I never have time, my to-do list is a mutant radioactive monster...
Critiquing Your Life
As an author you hear over and over You can’t critique your own work. And You can’t edit your own work. These are absolutely true, which is why I am thankful every day for my wondrous critique partners and editor. The other day I was thinking (I know—scary) and I began to wonder if I am not a good judge of what is working and not working in my writing, can I be a good judge of what is working and not working in my life? Should we ask people we trust to critique the way we live? I can tell you...
I hate 8 p.m. at night
Creative brain still going, brain that controls motor function—no better than a drunken monkey. I get great ideas, all of which I write down because they are priceless, but my ability to do anything else doesn’t exist. My mind is done. The kids are in bed and I have answered all the questions, solved all the problems, and made all the coherent thoughts that I’m going to for the day. So why is my creative mind still working? Is it because I can finally hear it now that the constant drone of...
Life Before IMDB (International Movie Data Base)
I love IMDB, and almost every movie or show I watch I will check IMDB at least once to find out where else I have seen an actor, where I recognize a voice from, or because the movie is so good that I want to know what else the director, actors, writers have done! I can’t imagine not being able to look up something right away. I should be able to, because I lived back in the dark times before IMDB *shivers* I have hazy, pain-filled memories of wracking my brain for hours trying to figure out...
